"Ich bin langweilig" is grammatically correct — but it means: you are a boring person. What you actually wanted to say: "Mir ist langweilig." In this video you learn three patterns to describe almost any feeling in German: ✅ Ich bin + adjective — who you are ✅ Mir ist + adjective — how you're doing right now (Dativ) ✅ Ich fühle mich + adjective — how you feel right now (reflexive) Plus: the intensity ladder (content → glad → happy), four everyday traps (freuen auf/über, Angst haben, Wie geht's?), and a dialogue between Leo and Lena. Part 1 of this series: separable ab-verbs. Part 2: weil / deshalb / denn. Part 4 is coming soon: obwohl / trotzdem / wenn. „Ich bin langweilig.“ Very many German learners say this sentence. It is grammatically correct. But it means something else. Oh no. So what does it mean? It means: you are a boring person. You wanted to say: Mir ist langweilig. One word different — and a completely different sentence! Today you learn three patterns for feelings. Pattern one: Ich bin. Pattern two: Mir ist. And pattern three: Ich fühle mich. Three patterns. With these you describe almost every feeling. Pattern one is simple: Ich bin plus adjective. Ich bin glücklich. Ich bin traurig. Ich bin müde. I say that every morning. I am proud of you, Leo. Remember: Ich bin says who you are. And that is exactly where the trap appears. Pattern two is different. Here it is not ich, but mir. Mir ist langweilig. Mir ist kalt. Why not ich bin kalt? Because the feeling comes over you. It is not your character. Mir ist warm. Mir ist schlecht. So: mir ist describes my moment. Exactly. Ich bin says who you are. Mir ist says how you are doing. It is summer. Thirty degrees. I say: Ich bin heiß. Leo! You had better not say that. Ich bin heiß means: I am attractive. Oh! And what do I say at thirty degrees? Mir ist heiß. Only two words different. Same in winter: not ich bin kalt, but mir ist kalt. So ich bin kalt would be: I am a cold person. Exactly right. Pattern three is the most personal: Ich fühle mich. Ich fühle mich gut. Ich fühle mich einsam. After a week of flu: Ich fühle mich besser. Careful: the mich never disappears. So not ich fühle gut? No. Always: ich fühle mich gut. Now it gets interesting. Feelings have levels. First family: joy. Level one: Ich bin zufrieden. Level two: Ich bin froh. And at the very top: Ich bin glücklich. Second family: anger. Level one: Ich bin genervt. The train is gone. Ich bin sauer. And the strongest level: Ich bin wütend. Three words instead of one. That sounds much more real. Third family: sadness. Level one: Ich bin traurig. My team lost. Ich bin enttäuscht. You rarely hear the strongest level: Ich bin verzweifelt. You need five words every day. Aufgeregt, gestresst, erleichtert, überrascht, einsam. Four everyday traps. Trap one: sich freuen. Ich freue mich auf das Wochenende. It is still coming. And über? Ich freue mich über dein Geschenk. Right. Auf looks forward, über looks back. Trap two: fear. You do not say ich bin Angst. But rather: Ich habe Angst. Trap three: Ich bin sauer auf meinen Bruder. And trap four is the most common of all. Wie geht es dir? Ich bin gut! No, Leo. Mir geht es gut. One question you hear every day: Wie geht es dir? Four answers are completely enough for you. On Monday morning: Mir geht es nicht so gut. Neutral and very German: Es geht. Ganz gut, danke. That is what I usually say. And on Friday evening: Mir geht es sehr gut! Four answers, every situation. Hello Lena! How are you? I am not doing so well. Oh. Are you ill? No. I am just tired and stressed. I am sorry. And I am bored. Then come along! I am looking forward to the concert. Now I already feel better! Mini quiz. Four questions. Think for a moment. Question one. You have nothing to do. What do you say? Mir ist langweilig. Question two. It is winter and you are freezing. Mir ist kalt. Question three. The holiday is coming next week. Ich freue mich auf den Urlaub. And question four. Spiders! Ich dot dot dot Angst. Ich habe Angst! Three patterns, one last time. Ich bin says who you are. Mir ist says how you are doing. And ich fühle mich says how I feel right now. An example with weil from part two: Ich bin müde, weil ich viel gearbeitet habe. Write in the comments: how do you feel today? Subscribe for part four: obwohl, trotzdem and wenn!
